As Nissan’s double-duty SUV, the Armada can tow up to 8500 pounds and has space for eight. The Armada inherits its luxury-branded counterpart’s plush interior and comes standard with navigation, Bose audio, and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking are optional on SL models and standard on the Platinum. A 390-hp 5.6-liter V-8 drives the rear or all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic.
- Top speed-133 mph
- Horse power-390 hp
- 0-60-5.9 sec
- 7-speed automatic with manual shifting mode
The styling changes from the Infiniti are evident mostly up front, where the Armada adopts a Nissan family face. And while we might have hoped to see the QX80’s chrome fender trim disappear here, the driver’s-side vent is actually functional (as an engine air intake), so the vents stay.
Peek inside the luxurious cabin and you might not notice any changes at all from the Infiniti. Padded surfaces abound, hard plastic has been all but banished, and the new Armada marks a wholesale upgrade in interior finery over its predecessor.
Even the base SV comes with navigation, a 13-speaker Bose stereo, dual power seats, and a backup camera. The SL adds leather, power operation for the third-row seats, a power liftgate, and 20-inch wheels.
the Armada’s four-wheel-drive system, which lets me lock torque in a 50:50 split front and rear with a dial on the console, and its descent control. That latter feature makes a racket as it alternatively brakes the wheels, but that sound is common among these types of vehicles. Lifting the wheels looks impressive, but I can’t help thinking that an adaptive suspension would do a better job at keeping tires in contact with dirt, making better use of the power.
The Armada’s surround view camera, initially designed to make parking safer, also proves a boon on the off-road course. My coach points out how its many views let me see not only the top-down angle on the car, but also a look down the sides, so I can see right where my wheels are placed.
